How to Keep Your Kids Active

With gyms closed, schedules out of whack and a lot of physical education classes shut down due to online learning, you may be wondering two things:

  • How do I fit in my workout?
  • How do I get my kids off the couch?

No matter what age your kids are, they need regular physical activity. If they’re young, this is usually pretty easy–though you may be looking for ways to help them burn off excess energy. If they’re older, your work is cut out for you!

Thankfully, there are resources out there to help you! Your young kids will love the Beachbody Kids Workouts, which are all free right now! They’re hosted by some of Beachbody’s most well-known names and faces like Tony Horton and Shaun T, and are simple enough for your little guys to do on their own. (But fun enough for you to join in!)

Access the workout series here.

If your kids are older, they can stream some free workouts from Beachbody on Demand right here (or you can sign them up for On Demand for a wider variety of workouts).

The key is to get your kids, who may be on Zoom all day or afraid to go places because of COVID up and active. Like us, being active will help them to pay attention better, maintain a positive attitude, sleep better and a host of other benefits.

How can you help motivate them, especially when you have limited time yourself?

  • Find ways to work out together. Family bike rides, walks and hikes are a great way to connect–without the distraction of technology. Workouts don’t need to be formal classes or lifting weights. Just get your kids to move their bodies!
  • Go geocaching this weekend! Geocaching is like treasure hunting, and it’s fun for all ages! Just download a free geocaching app and hit the trails (or the road!). You’ll find caches in the city and in more rural areas.
  • Make it required homework. In most homes, kids don’t get fun screen time until they’re done with their homework. If physical activity is “homework,” it’s a must-do!
  • Turn it into a game or competition. This is a great idea if you have a competitive family. Who can walk the most steps in a day? Who can log the most active time over the week? Make it a contest and the winner gets to pick the movie on family night.
  • Try out an obstacle course or trampoline park. Depending on where you live, you might have some outdoor activities your kids can participate in. Outdoor obstacle courses are physically and mentally challenging and trampoline parks are a sure way to burn off some steam for everyone!

The most important thing is to just get your kids active. Their physical and mental well-being depends on it–and yours probably does too!
