Keeping the Travel Bug at Bay

Travel is not what it usually is right now, not by a long shot. Everyone is cancelling big travel plans and staying close to home–either not traveling at all or getting away for short road trips only.

Our family loves to travel and we’re really hoping to take our regular trip around the holidays. We’re ready to get out there again!

Jack has been in Chicago through most of this, staying in temporary housing provided by the school. Since he’s been practicing with the Northwestern soccer team, he was able to stick near campus and spend (social distanced) time with friends.

He recently moved into an apartment, but with no car or furniture–and restricted travel–it was a bit challenging. Jeff was able to fly out to help Jack get what he needed and get settled.

But with airfares low, it might be time to start scoping out your holiday travel–or travel into 2021, depending on your comfort level. We’re loving the lower ticket prices for our big family!

Some things to remember:

  • Not all airlines are blocking the middle seats to make way for social distancing. Check with your preferred airline to see what its policy is.
  • Be prepared to wear a mask, no matter the age of your children or length of your flight. So if you have really young kiddos, you might want to hold off any travel plans if you don’t think they’ll handle wearing a mask for the flight.
  • If your passport is nearing its expiration date, you might consider starting the renewal process early. There’s currently a backlog of applications, sometimes doubling processing time. True, you have few options for traveling right now–but you may still want to be prepared.
  • Don’t expect meals or beverage service during your flight. Most airlines have cut all in-flight service in an effort to keep flight attendants safe and your masks on.

All this said, we’re still crossing our fingers that things begin to open up around the holidays. We’re ready to get away, but are committed to staying safe for now.

Instead of flying, we’ve been doing some exploring around Arizona.
