Investing in Yourself

Investing in Yourself

You know to put your own oxygen mask on first. But do you?

Everyone’s oxygen mask looks different because taking care of yourself and investing in yourself looks different for every person.

But if you don’t put yourself first, you won’t have the energy to take care of the other people—and things—in your life that also deserve (and demand) your attention. You’ll be too mentally exhausted.

What does investing in yourself look like to you? It might be:

  • Getting a massage
  • Going for a blowout
  • Reading a book
  • Going on a hike
  • Getting your nails done
  • Walking the dog
  • Meeting a friend for lunch or coffee

How you fill your own cup might also change over time, depending on what’s going on in your life.

For me, playing tennis and spending time alone with my husband are both important right now. Sometimes it also looks like me splurging on getting my hair done, something that I don’t do often.

Here are some other ideas of how to fill your own bucket so you can help others with theirs.

Try something new. Adventure can be incredibly rewarding if you’re a risk-taker and enjoy a sense of accomplishment.

Attend personal development seminars. Years ago I attended PSI Seminars, workshops and trainings that help you discover and create your ideal life.

Read some personal development. I get so inspired by go-getters and love to read how others navigate the world. Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty, Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger, and Stories That Stick by Kindra Hall are all good choices.

You do have the time to invest in yourself, especially if you say no to something else that’s not serving you or that doesn’t feel good. I challenge you to find 10 minutes today to do something for you. Then find 15 minutes tomorrow. And keep increasing the time until you’ve found a full hour each day to fill your bucket so you can help others keep theirs full.
