Healthy Options When Eating Out

As you know, I’ve been on a gut health journey. I’m trying to heal my gut from its angry state by eliminating processed foods and focusing on clean eating. Blood tests revealed that I have an allergy to corn (yes, corn), which means my options are rather limited.

But eating at home isn’t always an option. I try, but sometimes I find myself out and about at mealtime and there’s just no way I’d make it home. (Hangry, anyone?) So that means that I need to find something healthy and organic on the road.

This is extremely difficult to do. Those “healthy” fast food places really aren’t all that healthy. Preservatives and a limited organic offering mean that I usually go hungry. Until now.

I recently found Freshbox, an organic food option located a few miles from my house! It offers local and organic food that’s paleo and gluten free. And it also features vegetarian and vegan options. And while it’s more expensive than traditional “healthy” options, I’ll take it over the achy gut I get when I’m not as careful about what I put in my body.

For someone who is trying to eat better, this find was a welcome experience for me. I’ve also tried Mad Greens and Uberrito, both of which have multiple locations in my area. And, of course, I’ve gone the Wendy’s salad route, but dressings and the quality of the meat are always an issue.

I’m happy to see more of these healthier options popping up. Phoenix isn’t exactly a hotbed of organic restaurants and grocery options, but it’s slowly changing.

What are your favorite organic options when eating out? How do you find the healthiest meals, when you need food but you’re too far from home?
