Workout When Traveling

Make Workouts a Priority on the Road

Depending on your family’s lifestyle, staying on point with your workouts may be a challenge. But a vacation usually means that your diet isn’t completely on track either. If you don’t want to fall off the wagon completely, you need to find creative ways to fit those workouts in during vacation.

Whether you’re taking a cruise with your partner, visiting the beach with family, exploring a new city or camping with friends, there are a ton of ways to fit a workout into your vacation fun. Here are just a few ideas that I’ve used in the past:

  • Bring Beachbody with you through Beachbody on Demand
  • Use your hotel’s gym to lift weights or run on the treadmill
  • Go for a run with your partner, or push a child in a stroller
  • Throw a baseball around with friends or the kids or play a game of pick-up basketball
  • Rent bikes and ride the boardwalk with the whole family
  • Go for a stroll through the city—no matter where you are
  • Find a nearby gym or yoga studio that offers drop-in specials
  • If you’re staying near water, go kayaking, swimming, waterskiing or wakeboarding
  • Enjoy the scenery with a long hike

Your workouts don’t have to be vigorous, or what you would normally do at home. In fact, that can be part of the fun—finding something new to do.

Make it a Priority

When we’re at the lake with our family, Jeff and I make exercise a priority. We get it done early in the day because we may lose our motivation later. And we use each other as accountability partners. We also find ways to get the kids involved in whatever we might be doing. We’ll take one of them on a canoe ride, or jump on the trampoline with the kids and their cousins. Biking and hiking are great with a large group.

Some families look at vacation time as an opportunity to veg out and relax. We look at vacation as a time to be more active. Whatever I’m doing or wherever we are, making time to exercise makes me feel better about the food choices I’m making.

How do you find time to stay on track with your exercise program while you’re away from home?
