2015 - goals and aspirations

2015 Here I Come – Goals & Aspirations

As the year comes to an end – I find myself asking these questions…

What do I want in 2015?

I look at my family life, my children, my marriage, my friendships, my faith, my fitness, my nutrition and my contribution to my community. I am very fortunate and satisfied with my life. But I’m also the type of person that always wants to get better.  Be a better mom, a better friend, a better mentor, a better student of life. When I am completely honest with myself, I see that although I remain active (working out 3-4 days a week) I am not focused on a goal with my health and fitness. The lack of a goal has me just ‘getting by’. I know I want to see change. And I know that in order to see that change, I need to change my behaviors and habits.

What are my goals?

This coming year is about re-committing to me, my health and my daily exercise. Sure, I am a health and fitness coach – but sometimes I focus on helping everyone BUT MYSELF. I am not very organized and when things get out of control I tend to turn to the comforts of food and sugar to help me cope. I want to be more organized and treat food as FUEL, and not a reward or a comfort.

When I look at the relationships in my life – I start counting my blessings. The one thing I see that I can do to improve on all of these is to be MORE PRESENT. I struggle with setting boundaries. When it comes to helping others, I love it and I find I do it even when I should be doing other things. You know, stuff like cooking dinner, even sometimes when I should be helping kids with homework. Two specific goals for me in 2015 are to set work hours and put the phone away during non-work hours.

I want to give back to my community more in 2015. I love helping others (maybe I mentioned that…) and I want to volunteer more in 2015.  I will be figuring out exactly where and how to make this happen. Phoenix Children’s Hospital is one place to which I’m very interested in contributing my time and talents.

The first step to setting a concrete goal is deciding specifically what I want to change. Once I have a goal, I can really commit to the habits that will bring me to my goal. I’ve got some in place, but over the next 2 weeks I will be setting other goals for 2015. I look forward to sharing them with you.

I just started reading Thrive by Arianna Huffington and the theme of that book is that being successful in business these days isn’t just about having more power and more money – it is looking at a third metric which she calls well-being. It has influenced my mindset about SUCCESS and my definition of that is changing. I want to give back more and make more of an impact on society.  I have the power to HELP my children grow as well and I plan to help them each set a goal for themselves in 2015.

In a commencement address Arianna gave at Smith College in the spring of 2013, she likened our drive for money and power to two legs of a three-legged stool. They may hold us up temporarily, but sooner or later we’re going to topple over. We need a third leg — a third metric for defining success — to truly thrive. That third metric, she writes in Thrive, includes our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for compassion and giving.

As Arianna points out, our eulogies celebrate our lives very differently from the way society defines success. They don’t commemorate our long hours in the office, our promotions, or our sterling PowerPoint presentations as we relentlessly raced to climb up the career ladder. They are not about our resumes — they are about cherished memories, shared adventures, small kindnesses and acts of generosity, lifelong passions, and the things that made us laugh.

Evaluating and living more in line with this philosophy has me excited as I know it will help me succeed according to how I want to live my life.

What about you? What are you going to be getting out of and giving to the New Year? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
